Important News About Computer Safety
Remember, you can have too much of a good thing. Once you find yourself having fun with computers, it may become difficult to stop. Be very careful: Overuse of computers may lead to health problems, including back, neck and shoulder pains, eyestrain and carpal tunnel syndrome (a wrist/hand injury caused by repeated use on a keyboard). To avoid these injuries, it is important to use a good chair while working at your computer. Your chair should have an adjustable height and should be shaped ergonomically, with lower back support and adjustable armrests. When sitting in your adjustable chair, be sure to place your feet flat and firmly on the ground. Position your monitor so it is at eye level or slightly lower. Use your whole arm when you use your mouse and not only your wrist. When typing, make your strokes light and gentle, and try not to type for long, uninterrupted stretches of time. When you are not typing, make it a point to remove your hands from your keyboard and let your arms relax.
Eyestrain is another health risk associated with computer-usage. Human eyes have never been accustomed to focusing on close distances for long periods of time because our evolutionary ancestors preferred to look at objects that were further than 6 meters away. Today, we can reduce the risk of eyestrain by tilting our monitors to eliminate reflections or glare, reducing the brightness of the screen on the computer monitor settings controls and looking away from our computer screen occasionally to focus on faraway objects. You should also remember to blink. Lack of blinking can cause dryness of the eyes and ultimately, eyestrain.
If your household includes young computer users, protect them by setting up computer workstations fit for their more diminutive size. Install a smaller mouse that contours to a child-sized hand and demonstrate to your child how the keyboard and mouse should be used safely, coupled with the appropriate posture. Limit your child’s computer game playing time, and make sure they are spending a decent amount of time outdoors, playing real sports.
